President William Ruto has announced that the Sh345 million Chwele Modern Market will be ready for use by August this year, giving traders in the region a modern and organized trading space.

Speaking during an inspection tour of the facility at Chwele in Bungoma County, the President said the market will significantly improve business activities while providing a clean and conducive environment for traders.

“I will be coming back in August to officially open this market so that our mama mboga can start operating from a dignified and well-organized space,” said the President.

Ruto noted that the national government is implementing an ambitious programme to construct modern markets across the county, revealing that 15 markets are already underway in Bungoma, with plans to add five more to further support small-scale traders.

The President also announced major investments in water infrastructure aimed at improving access to clean water. He said the government will invest Sh230 million to extend an 88-kilometre water pipeline to supply households in Kibabii and Kanduyi areas within Bungoma town.

In addition, Ruto revealed that Sh2 billion funding from the Korea International Cooperation Agency will be used to construct another major water plant to serve the towns of Kapsokwony, Kimilili, Naitiri and Webuye.

At the same event, Kenneth Lusaka urged the President to ensure that contractors handling national government road projects in Bungoma complete them within the agreed timelines.

“Your Excellency, we kindly request that pressure be put on contractors working on key roads within Bungoma so that they are completed on time,” Lusaka said.

The governor added that once the national government completes the flagship projects currently underway in the county, residents will clearly feel the impact of development through improved infrastructure, trade and service delivery.
