Kanja Draws a Red Line Against Political Goons as Kenya Heads to 2027 Polls

By Our Correspondent,Nairobi

As Kenya steadily moves towards the 2027 General Election, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has issued some of his strongest warnings yet against political violence, hired goons and criminal gangs seeking to disrupt the country’s democratic process.

He has cautioned politicians against sponsoring violence and warned criminal elements that security agencies are closely monitoring individuals and networks involved in organizing, financing or executing acts of lawlessness.

Kanja has maintained that the National Police Service will not allow criminal gangs to infiltrate political activities, emphasizing that anyone found engaging in violence, intimidation or destruction of property will face the full force of the law regardless of their political status, influence or connections.

His message has remained clear and consistent: Kenya’s elections must be peaceful, and there will be no room for criminal gangs, goons or organized networks seeking to destabilize the country ahead of the polls.

In Kenya’s history, few police officers have climbed the ranks as steadily and extensively as Kanja.

He joined the Kenya Police Service as a Police Constable in 1985 and has spent nearly four decades in law enforcement, rising through virtually every rank to become the country’s highest-ranking police officer.

Kanja was born in Nyeri County and is in his 60’s.

He is widely regarded as a seasoned security commander whose career has spanned frontline policing, specialized security operations, administration and strategic leadership.

His rise through the service saw him hold numerous positions, including Chief Armourer and Deputy Chief Armourer at Police Headquarters, Deputy Commandant of the Kenya Airports Police Unit, Kilifi County Police Commander, Deputy Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU), Commandant of the GSU and later Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service.

His tenure as GSU Commandant between 2018 and 2023 remains one of the most notable chapters of his career.

During that period, he oversaw operations within one of Kenya’s elite security units responsible for handling major security threats, public order management and supporting counter terrorism operations.

Kanja’s long service and extensive experience placed him among the most qualified officers for the top police job when former Inspector-General Japheth Koome resigned in July 2024 amid public scrutiny over the handling of anti government demonstrations (Gen-Z’s) protests.

President William Ruto subsequently appointed him acting Inspector General of police before formally nominating him for the position.

Following parliamentary approval, Kanja was sworn in as the substantive Inspector General of Police on September 19, 2024.

Since assuming office, Kanja has faced some of the toughest challenges confronting the National Police Service.

He inherited a police service under pressure to rebuild public confidence amid concerns over police accountability, human rights violations and public trust.

His tenure has also coincided with heightened political activity as the country moves towards the 2027 General Election, requiring the police service to maintain security while safeguarding constitutional freedoms.

One of the major tests of his leadership has been dealing with cases that attracted national and international attention, including allegations of police misconduct and deaths in custody.

Such incidents have placed the National Police Service under intense scrutiny, with Kanja repeatedly pledging accountability, professionalism and adherence to the rule of law.

Despite these challenges, Kanja has pursued an ambitious modernization agenda aimed at transforming police operations and improving service delivery.

Under his leadership, several police stations across the country have undergone renovations and upgrades to improve working conditions for officers and services to the public.

The latest example came yesterday (Wednesday) with the modernization of Kiamumbi Police Station administration block in Kiambu County, reflecting his broader vision of creating modern, efficient and citizen friendly policing facilities.

Kanja has also championed the adoption of technology and intelligence led policing to combat increasingly sophisticated criminal activities.

His administration according to some senior officers who talked to DNK-International has intensified operations against organized criminal gangs, armed robbers, drug traffickers, human trafficking syndicates and other criminal networks operating across the country.

Among his most memorable public remarks are his repeated assertions that criminals have no place in Kenya and that the National Police Service will relentlessly pursue those involved in violence, lawlessness and organized crime regardless of their status or connections.

He has consistently emphasized professionalism, accountability and intelligence led policing as the cornerstones of a modern police service.

Colleagues and security analysts describe Kanja as a disciplined, methodical and low profile officer who prefers operational results over publicity.

His nearly 40 year policing career, which began at the lowest rank of Police Constable and culminated in the highest office in the National Police Service, is often cited as a remarkable example of dedication, resilience and professional excellence within Kenya’s security sector.

As the country towards GenZ’s second anniversary and general election next year, Kanja stands at the centre of Kenya’s security architecture with the immense responsibility of modernizing the police service, restoring public confidence, dismantling criminal networks and ensuring a secure environment as the country approaches one of its most consequential periods.

Whether measured by his fight against organized crime, his push for police reforms or his determination to keep political violence at bay, Kanja’s leadership will undoubtedly play a critical role in shaping Kenya’s security landscape in the years ahead.
