Professor John Krop Lonyang’apuo has carved out one of the most remarkable careers in Kenya’s public life, rising from a humble village in West Pokot to become a respected mathematician, university administrator, Permanent Secretary, Senator, Governor and political party leader.
He’s widely admired for his intellect, blunt honesty and colourful public speaking style.
Lonyang’apuo has remained a dominant figure in West Pokot politics for more than a decade.
His journey is a story of resilience, education, public service and determination to transform his community.
He was born on December 10,1964 in Kanyarkwat, West Pokot County.
Growing up in a pastoralist community where access to education was limited,as he told DNK-International he understood from an early age that education was the key to changing lives.
Despite the challenges of rural life, he excelled in his studies and steadily built a reputation as one of the brightest students from the region.
He began his education at Kanyarkwat Primary School before proceeding to Ortum Secondary School.
Lonyang’apuo later joined the prestigious St Mary’s School Yala for his Advanced Level education.
His outstanding academic performance earned him admission to Egerton University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pure Mathematics.
Determined to advance his knowledge, he pursued postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Applied Mathematics from the University of Leeds, becoming one of the few Kenyan politicians with a doctorate in mathematics.
Long before entering politics, Lonyang’apuo had already established himself as a respected academic.
He lectured at Egerton University, where he inspired many students through his mastery of mathematics and analytical thinking.
His leadership qualities saw him appointed Principal of Chepkoilel Campus, then a constituent college of Moi University, where he played a key role in strengthening academic programmes and institutional growth.
He also served as Chairman of the Governing Council of Kabarak University and sat on the board of East African Portland Cement Company, further demonstrating his versatility in both education and public administration.
His impressive academic and managerial record attracted the attention of the national government.
In 2008, President Mwai Kibaki appointed him Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industrialization before later transferring him to the Ministry of Public Works.
During his tenure in government, he helped oversee industrial development programmes, infrastructure projects and policy implementation.
His work earned him respect as a disciplined and results oriented technocrat capable of handling demanding government assignments.
Although he enjoyed a successful career in academia and government administration, Professor Lonyang’apuo increasingly felt that he could make a greater impact through elective leadership.
Encouraged by elders, professionals and community leaders from West Pokot who believed the county needed educated and visionary leadership, he made the bold decision to enter politics ahead of the 2013 General Election.
He has often indicated that his motivation was driven by a desire to uplift the living standards of his people through better education, improved infrastructure and economic empowerment rather than by personal political ambition.
His political debut was successful.
In 2013, he was elected the first Senator for West Pokot County on a KANU ticket under the Constitution of Kenya 2010.
As Senator, he became known for passionately defending county governments, advocating equitable sharing of national resources and championing education and development in marginalised regions.
His articulate contributions in Parliament quickly elevated his national profile.
In 2017, Lonyang’apuo sought the governorship of West Pokot and defeated incumbent Governor Simon Kachapin in a closely contested election.
As Governor, he embarked on an ambitious development agenda aimed at improving infrastructure, healthcare, education, water access and agriculture.
His administration invested in the construction and rehabilitation of roads connecting remote areas, expanded health facilities, supported Early Childhood Development education, increased bursary allocations for needy students and promoted water projects in drought prone parts of the county.
He also championed peace building initiatives in conflict prone border areas and strengthened livestock and agricultural programmes, recognising that these sectors formed the backbone of the county’s economy.
One of his major achievements was promoting education as the foundation for long term development.
Drawing from his own life experience, he consistently encouraged parents to prioritise schooling and urged young people to pursue higher education regardless of their background.
His administration also supported the expansion of vocational training institutions to equip young people with practical skills.
Beyond county leadership, Professor Lonyang’apuo played a central role in founding and leading the Kenya Union Party (KUP), a regional political party that sought to amplify the voice of the Pokot community in national politics while advocating for equitable development and inclusion.
Under his leadership, KUP emerged as an influential political outfit in West Pokot and neighbouring counties.
However, his political journey has not been without setbacks.
In the 2022 General Election, he sought a second term as Governor but was narrowly defeated by his predecessor, Simon Kachapin, who contested on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
The election was one of the closest gubernatorial races in the country.
Political observers attributed his defeat to several factors, including the strong UDA wave that swept across the Rift Valley, shifting political alliances, internal divisions within the county and the advantages enjoyed by candidates aligned with the national government.
Despite the loss, Lonyang’apuo accepted the outcome peacefully and urged his supporters to maintain calm, earning praise for demonstrating political maturity and respect for democratic processes.
Far from retiring, Professor Lonyang’apuo has remained active in public life. He has openly declared that he will contest the West Pokot governorship again in the 2027 General Election.
He argues that many of the development projects initiated during his first term require continuity and believes his experience in government gives him an advantage in addressing the county’s challenges.
His supporters point to his extensive administrative experience, educational background and strong grassroots support as key strengths, while analysts note that the outcome will largely depend on political alliances, party dynamics and voter sentiment closer to the election.
Professor Lonyang’apuo has earned a reputation as one of Kenya’s most outspoken politicians.
He is known for speaking his mind, often using humour and direct language to make political points.
His phrase “kijana fupi round,” directed at a political rival during a public rally, quickly became a national catch phrase and remains one of the most memorable political remarks in recent Kenyan history.
Beyond the humour, he has consistently urged leaders to prioritise development over endless political campaigns and has frequently called for unity, peaceful elections and greater investment in education.
Away from politics, Professor Lonyang’apuo is a family man.
He is married to Dr. Mary Lonyang’apuo, an accomplished academic, and together they have children.
Despite his prominence in public life, he has largely kept his family out of the political spotlight, preferring to separate his private and public life.
His journey from a young boy in rural West Pokot to earning a doctorate in mathematics, serving as a university leader, Permanent Secretary, Senator and Governor demonstrates the transformative power of education, determination and public service.
Whether admired for his academic achievements, leadership experience, fearless political style or commitment to improving the lives of his people, his influence on West Pokot and Kenyan politics remains significant.
As the county prepares for another electoral cycle, his anticipated bid for the governorship in 2027 is expected to once again place him at the centre of one of Kenya’s most competitive and closely followed political contests.
