A police officer was found dead inside an office at the Kisii Central Police station on Tuesday morning in an incident that has prompted an official investigation.

According to a police report, the body of Corporal Marjorie Bosibori, 42, a police signaller attached to the station radio room, was discovered at around 8.00 a.m. by a fellow officer who had gone to open the radio room office.

The officer was found seated inside the locked office with a gunshot wound to the chest.

An AK-47 rifle was recovered beside the body.

Senior police officers who visited the scene indicated that preliminary findings suggest the officer sustained the fatal injury while alone in the office.

However, investigators are yet to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police said the rifle had been issued to the officer on the evening of July 27 for security duties at a supermarket within Kisii Town.

Crime scene investigators recovered the AK-47 rifle, one spent cartridge, a magazine loaded with 29 rounds of ammunition, the office padlock key, assorted medical drugs and three mobile phones.

No note explaining the circumstances of the incident was recovered.

The scene was processed by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the body was moved to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Police have opened an inquest as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.
