Before donning the uniform of the National Police Service, Rev. Fr. Jeremiah Mwenda Muriuki had already dedicated his life to serving God.
Today, he stands as one of Kenya’s most remarkable public servants, uniquely balancing his calling as a Catholic priest with his role as a Superintendent of Police (SP) and Principal Chaplain in the National Police Service.
His life embodies the belief that service to humanity is, indeed, service to God.
Born and raised in the lush hills of Meru County as the firstborn in a family of four children, Fr. Mwenda developed a deep sense of responsibility from an early age.
It was during his childhood that he first felt the call to the priesthood,a calling that would shape the course of his life.
In 1998, he joined the Minor Seminary, beginning a 13 year journey of spiritual, intellectual and pastoral formation.
His commitment culminated in his ordination as a deacon in April 2013 and later as a Catholic priest in November the same year.
By embracing priesthood, he devoted himself entirely to God and the service of His people.
Fr. Mwenda pursued extensive academic studies to strengthen his ministry.
He earned a Diploma in Philosophical Studies and a Certificate in Spirituality from St. Joseph’s Seminary, a Diploma in Theological Studies from Christ the King Seminary in Nyeri, a Bachelor of Arts in Theology from the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome, and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).
Following his ordination, he served in several Catholic parishes, including Michaka, Munithu, Nkabune, Nkubu, Makupa, Buruburu, Mlolongo, and the Cathedral Parishes of Meru and Embu.
His pastoral ministry also extended to institutions of higher learning, where he served as Chaplain at Chuka University and Kenyatta University, mentoring and guiding young people in their spiritual journey.
For Fr. Mwenda, priestly celibacy has never diminished his understanding of family.
Instead, he considers every officer, parishioner and citizen he serves as part of his extended family, while maintaining close ties with his biological family and fellow priests.
In 2017, his vocation took an extraordinary turn when he answered another call,to minister to the men and women serving in Kenya’s security sector.
Recognising the emotional, psychological and spiritual challenges faced by police officers, he enlisted in the National Police Service.
He successfully underwent the demanding Basic Police Course at the National Police College, Embakasi ‘A’ Campus, where he trained alongside other recruits in policing skills, discipline and law enforcement.
Beginning his career as a Police Constable, Fr. Mwenda steadily rose through the ranks to become a Superintendent of Police (SP) and Principal Chaplain.
His service has taken him across Kenya, including Tharaka, the Eastern Region, the Coast, Nairobi, the State House Chaplaincy and the Embakasi Police Campuses, where he has provided spiritual guidance and emotional support to officers and their families.
Understanding that policing requires more than spiritual encouragement, Fr. Mwenda further specialised in counselling and leadership.
He obtained a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Kenyatta University, a Certificate in Counselling from Amani Counselling Centre, advanced training in Executive Management from Strathmore University, and qualifications in Servant Leadership and Child Protection from Tangaza University.
These qualifications have enabled him to provide holistic care to police officers by addressing not only their spiritual needs but also their mental and emotional well being.
Through counselling, mentorship and pastoral care, he has become a trusted source of hope for officers grappling with trauma, stress and the pressures of policing.
Among his notable achievements as gathered by DNK-International is helping establish the Catholic Chaplaincy within the National Police Service while encouraging more priests to serve within Kenya’s disciplined services.
He continues to urge officers to uphold integrity, seek God’s guidance, care for one another and faithfully serve the public with honour and compassion.
Rev. Fr. Jeremiah Mwenda Muriuki, HSC, SP, remains an outstanding example of faith in action.
As a priest, scholar, counsellor and police officer, he has demonstrated that true leadership is measured not by power, but by sacrifice, humility and unwavering commitment to serving others.
His extraordinary journey continues to inspire countless Kenyans, proving that it is possible to faithfully serve both God and country while transforming lives along the way.
