Boniface Mwangi Invokes Mau Mau Spirit in Mt Kenya Tour Ahead of 2027 State House

By Our Correspondent,Nyahururu

Presidential aspirant in 2027 Boniface Mwangi has invoked the spirit of the Mau Mau liberation struggle, calling on Kenyans to reclaim the ideals of justice, equality and accountable leadership as the country heads towards the 2027 General Election.

Mwangi made the remarks after touring the historic Mau Mau caves on the slopes of Mt. Kenya, where the Land and Freedom Army, led by Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi, operated during the struggle against British colonial rule.

Led by Alamin Kimathi of Utu Heritage, the tour was attended by young people from the Utu na Mazingira Network and members of the Maganjo Cultural Group, whose families trace their roots to Mau Mau fighters.

Mwangi visited the caves where freedom fighters hid, held strategy meetings and slept in tiny rock hewn chambers while evading British colonial forces and the Home Guards.

He said the freezing conditions, military hide outs and stories of sacrifice brought Kenya’s liberation struggle to life, reminding him of the heavy price paid for independence.

Mwangi also visited other historic resistance sites around Mt. Kenya, including the Naromoru caves, remembered by Mau Mau veterans as the “Kenya Parliament”, as well as the Kariba Caves and the Sacred Valley, which served as key centres for planning the resistance.

Reflecting on Kenya’s history, Mwangi said the Mau Mau fought for land, freedom and dignity, but lamented that the land many sacrificed their lives to recover was never fully returned to ordinary Kenyans.

He noted that the capture of Dedan Kimathi by colonial forces aided by local collaborators underscored the painful reality that the liberation struggle also faced betrayal from within.

As he intensifies his campaign for the presidency, Mwangi urged Kenyans to honour the sacrifices of the Mau Mau by electing leaders committed to justice, integrity, equality and accountability, saying those values remain the true foundation of the nation they fought to build.
