Health workers’ union leaders have issued a fresh ultimatum to county governments, demanding the immediate employment of healthcare workers on permanent and pensionable terms and the implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The officials warned that unless county governments issue permanent and pensionable appointment letters, they will advise their members not to resume work after the current industrial action.
The union leaders accused county governments of failing to honour the agreed CBA and ignoring repeated requests for negotiations.
They said counties have declined to engage them in discussions aimed at resolving the longstanding labour dispute.
They further warned that if county governments are unable to employ health workers on permanent and pensionable terms, they will push for the management of health services to be reverted to the national government.
Speaking on behalf of the unions were the Chairman of the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO), Dr Peterson Wachira, the Chairman of the Kenya National Union of Medical Laboratory Officers, Nicholas Odipo, KUCO General Secretary, George Gibore, and the union’s Treasurer Mary Bonface,the officials maintained that healthcare workers deserve secure employment and the full implementation of agreements already reached, saying this is essential to improving service delivery and safeguarding the welfare of medical personnel across the country.
