Mukurwe-ini Member of Parliament John Kaguchia has emerged as one of the most outspoken and influential politicians from the Mt Kenya region.
He has earned both admiration and criticism for his fearless style of politics.
His arrest on Monday morning by detectives has once again thrust him into the national spotlight, placing him at the centre of debates on freedom of expression, political intolerance and the future of opposition politics in Kenya.
Kaguchia was on Monday arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) moments after leaving the Royal Media Services premises, where he had spent the night following claims that police had surrounded the station after his appearance on Inooro TV’s Kiririmbi programme.
Speaking to Citizen TV before his arrest, the legislator maintained that authorities were pursuing him over remarks he made during a political rally in Kieni, Nyeri County, saying his statements had been deliberately distorted by his political opponents.
He was later taken to DCI headquarters for questioning and court through an order directed that he be released on a cash bail of Sh100 000 pending his arraignment.
The controversy stems from remarks made during the Kieni rally in which Kaguchia warned Mt Kenya residents against voting for President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Authorities viewed the comments as inflammatory and opened investigations into possible incitement, while the MP insisted that any concerns over his speech should be handled through the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).
Born and raised in Nyeri County, Kaguchia is regarded as one of the younger generation of leaders shaping Central Kenya politics.
The MP has built a reputation as an energetic grassroots mobiliser whose influence has steadily grown since entering elective politics.
Before joining Parliament, Kaguchia built a successful career in the private sector, particularly in business and investment.
His corporate experience and close interaction with farmers and entrepreneurs in Mukurwe-ini strengthened his public profile and eventually inspired his entry into politics, where he campaigned on economic empowerment, youth employment and agricultural reforms.
His journey into politics culminated in the 2022 General Election when he won the Mukurwe-ini parliamentary seat on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, succeeding Anthony Githiaka Kiai.
Since then, he has served his first term in the National Assembly.
Kaguchia later became one of the most vocal critics of President William Ruto’s administration, especially following the fallout between the President and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
He is now considered a close political ally of Gachagua and has frequently appeared at opposition rallies associated with the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), defending Gachagua and calling for greater political unity in the Mt Kenya region.
Political observers increasingly view Kaguchia as one of the influential voices shaping Central Kenya’s political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
His ability to attract large crowds, particularly among young voters, has elevated his profile beyond Nyeri County.
Among his memorable public statements is his repeated declaration, “I will not be intimidated to stop campaigning for DCP and against the reelection of President William Ruto in 2027.
He’s also maintained that constitutional institutions, rather than security agencies, should address political speech disputes, arguing that democratic space must be protected.
His supporters who talked to DNK-International describe him as bold, outspoken and uncompromising, while critics accuse him of using inflammatory language that fuels political tensions.
Regardless of where opinion falls, John Kaguchia has firmly established himself as one of the most watched politicians from the Mt Kenya region, with his actions and statements likely to continue shaping Kenya’s political discourse as the country heads toward the 2027 General Election.
