An unexploded rocket propelled grenade (RPG) has been discovered within the perimeter of a police camp in Dadaab, Garissa County, prompting security agencies to initiate measures for its safe disposal.
The explosive device was found on Wednesday during a routine patrol by officers attached to the Quick Response Unit (QRU) at SARETHO Camp.
According to a police report, the RPG was buried in a heap of soil forming part of the camp’s defensive perimeter.
Officers believe the unexploded ordnance may have been left behind earlier this year when the camp reportedly came under attack by suspected militia fighters.
The incident was reported by the officer in charge of the QRU, who requested the deployment of the Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) to safely destroy the explosive and eliminate any danger to officers working at the facility.
The Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) is handling the matter as investigations continue to establish the circumstances under which the RPG remained within the camp.
