Police officers on Sunday intercepted two Nissan vans and a Voxy vehicle at Tosha Filling Station along the Kisumu–Nairobi Highway, arresting 15 suspects and recovering several crude weapons.
The interception has raised questions over the group’s alleged intentions, with investigators probing whether the suspects were headed to Homa Bay to disrupt the Linda Mwananchi rally.
Police sources familiar with the operation, but not authorised to speak to the media, said investigations were also underway to establish who may have instructed or sponsored the group.
The arrests come amid heightened political activity in Homa Bay, where organisers of the Linda Mwananchi movement have vowed that their rally will proceed despite reports of attempts to block access to the town.
The suspects remained in police custody as investigations continued, while the recovered weapons and the three vehicles were being examined as part of the inquiry.
Police have yet to publicly confirm the identities of those arrested or establish whether they were directly linked to any political organisation.
