High court orders urgent meeting to recover Sh250 Million owed to United Insurance Company

By Johnson Njenga,Milimani Court.

The High Court has directed the liquidator of collapsed United Insurance Company Limited, Kamal Bhatt, to urgently convene a meeting with the insurer’s shareholders and directors in a bid to recover more than Sh250 million owed to the company.

Justice Francis Gikonyo issued the directive on Monday after lawyer Charles Kihara, representing creditors, criticised the liquidator over what he described as the slow manner in which the liquidation process was being handled.

The court also directed the liquidation committee to convene a meeting today (Tuesday) to establish modalities for paying claims by third-party creditors whose proofs of debt have already been approved by the Claims Verification Technical Committee.

The meeting is expected to address the outstanding claims and provide a framework for settling creditors whose claims have been verified.

Justice Gikonyo further directed the parties involved in the liquidation process to take urgent steps towards resolving the outstanding issues.

The matter will come up for further hearing on October 21.
