Police in Embu County have launched investigations into a violent robbery at Kamiu bridge in Embu west during which two medical practitioners were attacked, their mobile phones stolen, and a female doctor’s vehicle driven away by armed assailants.

According to a police report recorded at Embu Police Station, the incident occurred on Friday at around 11.20pm, as Dr Lewis Njeru Mutugi, a psychiatrist at Embu County Level 5 Hospital, and his colleague, Dr Joy Nyawira, were travelling home in a blue Toyota Vitz.

The two were reportedly intercepted at Kamiu bridge by four men armed with pangas.

They assaulted them and robbed them of their mobile phones before ordering them to leave the scene.

The attackers drove away in Dr Nyawira’s vehicle.

Dr Mutugi, who sustained minor injuries to his ribs, reported the incident to Embu Police Station in the early hours of Saturday.

A joint team of police officers from Embu Police Station and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) visited the scen and searched nearby forests and surrounding areas for the suspects, but no arrests had been made by the time of the report.

The whereabouts of Dr Nyawira had not been established, prompting efforts to locate her residence and establish whether she had safely returned home.

Police said the scene had been processed and investigations were ongoing, with the case being handled by DCI Embu West detectives.
