Authorities in Migori County have successfully reintegrated hundreds of girls rescued from female genital mutilation (FGM) with their parents.
The event was held on Saturday during a major community sensitisation forum held at the Ntimaru Police Station grounds.
The event, which ran from 10:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., was organized by Ntimaru Police and brought together senior government officials, security agencies, child protection officers, development partners, parents, clergy, and community members.
In attendance were Deputy Regional Police Commander for Nyanza, Wilberforce Sicharani, Migori County Police Commander Joel Chebii Kiptum and a representative of the Migori County Commissioner Catherine Thuo.
Migori County Gender Based Violence (GBV) Coordinator Catherine Minganyi, representatives from the Deputy County Commissionerโs office Ntimaru, Childrenโs Officer Wambura, GBV Coordinator Gasaya, senior police officers, World Vision representatives, NGAO officials, community health providers, and other well-wishers were present.
A total of 440 rescued girls from various rescue homes were safely handed over to their parents after extensive sensitisation on child protection and the dangers of FGM.
Addressing the gathering, the regional police representative emphasized that parents bear the primary responsibility of protecting their children from FGM, reiterating that female circumcision is a criminal offence under Kenyan law.
Parents were also advised to ensure their children return to school and to take full responsibility for school fees and other basic needs.
The exercise briefly faced disruption when a group of rowdy youths attempted to interfere with the meeting.
However, police officers who were on standby swiftly repulsed them.
No injuries were reported, and the programme continued uninterrupted.
The event concluded peacefully, with guests departing after the successful reintegration
and reaffirmation of the governmentโs commitment to ending FGM and safeguarding the rights and welfare of the girl child.
