Wananchi Group (K) Limited has been served with a statutory demand seeking payment of Sh46.9 million, setting the stage for possible liquidation proceedings at the High Court in Nairobi.
The demand was issued by CP Cables Limited under the Insolvency Act, 2015, and filed before the Commercial and Tax Division of the High Court in Insolvency Cause No. E017 of 2026. CP Cables claims the amount represents an unpaid commercial debt owed by Wananchi and has given the company 21 days to settle the sum, secure it, or satisfy the court that there exists a valid counterclaim or set-off.
According to court documents, Wananchi must either pay the amount directly to CP Cables or through its advocates, Madhani Advocates LLP, failing which the creditor has warned it will move to court to seek liquidation orders against the company.
The statutory demand, dated February 6, 2026, was issued pursuant to Section 384(1) of the Insolvency Act and accompanying regulations.
Under Kenyan insolvency law, failure to comply with such a demand within the stipulated period is treated as evidence that a company is unable to pay its debts as they fall due.
Wananchi, which operates under the Zuku brand, is one of Kenya’s largest providers of pay television, broadband internet, and digital services.
The company is a subsidiary of Wananchi Group Holdings, which its majority is owned by Axian Telecom, a pan-African telecommunications group with operations across East and Southern Africa.
Axian Telecom, headquartered in Mauritius, has in recent years expanded its footprint in Kenya through Wananchi, positioning the firm as a key player in the country’s fast growing digital and fibre-optic infrastructure market.
The insolvency demand against Wananchi comes amid increased scrutiny of corporate debt obligations within the telecoms and media sector, which has faced rising operational costs and stiff competition.
If Wananchi fails to respond within the 21 day window, CP Cables will be entitled to petition the court for liquidation, a move that could have significant implications for the company’s operations and its parent group, Axian Telecom.
