An accidental firearm discharge briefly caused concern at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Monday afternoon, after a police officer attached to the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock discharged a round while on duty at Terminal 1D.
According to a report filed at JKIA Police Station,the incident occurred at about 1:30pm, inside the Kenya Airways security office at Terminal 1D.
The matter was reported by Peter Lekesio, a Kenya Airways security officer.
He told police that the officer who is attached to Agriculture and Livestock Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, discharged one round from his firearm while performing National Security Protection (NSP) duties.
At the time of the incident, the firearm had reportedly been handed over to Kenya Airways for transportation to Mombasa.
The Cabinet Secretary and the officer were booked to travel on Kenya Airways Flight which was already on final boarding call.
The officer recovered the spent cartridge following the discharge.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries or property damage were reported as a result of the incident.
Airport operations were not disrupted, and the situation was quickly brought under control.
