An assistant chief in Kakamega county is counting losses after an electrical fault triggered a fire that destroyed property worth an estimated Sh500,000.
The incident occurred at Emakhwale Sub-location, Mumias East Sub County.
According to a report filed at Shianda Police Station today, the incident was reported by Emakhwale Assistant Chief Ismael Sakwa Eshikumo.
The administrator told police that on Wednesday, March 11, 2026 at around 6:00pm, while he was carrying out routine chores at his hime he suddenly heard a loud bang coming from his house.
Upon rushing inside to check what had happened, he discovered that several bulbs had been violently forced out of their holders, an indication of a possible electrical surge.
As he attempted to switch off power at the main switch, he realized that a fire had already broken out and was rapidly spreading inside the house.
The flames quickly engulfed the master bedroom, destroying household property valued at approximately Sh500,000 before the situation could be contained.
Police officers from Shianda Police Station later visited the scene and documented the incident.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the fire.
DCI officers in Mumias East have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the electrical fault that led to the fire.
