An assistant chief is fighting for his life after he was shot by suspected armed assailants who also stole his vehicle in an attack in Mandera East Sub-County.

The incident was reported by Bulla Mpya Location Chief Abdullahi Birik on Wednesday.

The chief informed police that the victim, Ibrahim Derrow Akasham, the Assistant Chief of Bokolow Sub-location, had been shot by unknown assailants near Mama Ebla Shop within Barawako Location.

Police officers led by the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO), the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), and a team of security personnel visited both the hospital and the scene of the incident.

Preliminary investigations established that the administrator had just broken his Ramadan fast at his home and was driving out when he was ambushed by two armed attackers riding on a motorcycle.

The attackers then fled towards the Kenya–Somalia border.

The injured assistant chief was first rushed to Bulla Mpya Nursing Home before being transferred to Mandera Referral Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Detectives recovered one spent cartridge at the scene.

The victim’s G3 rifle with 19 rounds of ammunition, was also recovered from his house and handed over to the SCCIO for safe custody.

Police have launched investigations and a manhunt for the suspects as officers pursue leads in the cross-border escape route.
