Bishop George Kamunya: From Mau Mau Bloodline to the Modern Pulpit

By Our Reporter, Nyeri

Bishop George Kamunya, the outspoken founder of Oasis of Grace Church in Nairobi, is a religious figure whose life sits at the crossroads of Kenya’s liberation history, modern evangelical ministry and persistent public controversy.

Known for preaching a gospel that blends faith with economic empowerment, Kamunya has for more than a decade remained a visible and divisive voice in Kenya’s charismatic Christian space.

Born in Nyeri County and believed to be in his 60’s, Kamunya (not related to the late Stephen Kamunya, the father of former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga), a distinction he has publicly clarified in the past.

He is, however, a nephew of the late Field Marshal Muthoni wa Kirima, the iconic Mau Mau freedom fighter and close confidant of Dedan Kimathi.

Kamunya has often cited this family connection as a source of pride and inspiration, while lamenting what he describes as the long neglect of Mau Mau veterans by successive governments.

Field Marshal Muthoni, whose iconic dreadlocks were shaved by former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta shortly before her death, passed away in September 2023 at the age of 92.

She was buried at her rural home in Tetu, Nyeri County, in a ceremony that drew national attention and reignited debate over the welfare of freedom fighters.

Among the mourners was then Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Kamunya rose to prominence through Oasis of Grace Church and its affiliated Grace Time Society, a programme that teaches congregants not only spiritual discipline but also saving, investment and collective land ownership.

The initiative has been linked to highly publicised land ventures along Kangundo Road and in other parts of the country.

Supporters credit him with helping many believers acquire land and embrace a culture of financial planning, while critics accuse him of blurring the line between church and business.

The bishop has also claimed that some individuals involved in land transactions refused to remit payments, and that one man he is seeking allegedly disappeared with several of his title deeds, claims that Daily News Kenya-International established that’s now the subject of police investigations and may be picked up by DCI’s land fraud unit because of complexities being introduced by the man being sought by Kamunya.

Kamunya has said he plans to place advertisements in local media to help trace the suspect, whom he describes as a self proclaimed born again Christian and international businessman from Kakamega county and a resident of Nairobi city.

He’s even contemplating reaching out to Geoffrey Mosiria an official at the Nairobi County Government through his publicity stint to help him in reaching the alleged “conman”.

Mosiria known for coming to the rescue of Kenyans conned and suffering like a 22 years old lady who was filmed semi nude and her pictures curculated online by an alleged boyfriend in Nairobi has not confirmed whether Bishop Kamunya has reached him for help.

Despite controversy, Kamunya has maintained a loyal following and a steady media presence, frequently commenting on national issues, morality, leadership and economic justice.

He’s appeared on several television stations among them Kenyatta family owned K24 Television and Kameme TV,KBC radio and radio Maisha,Biblia Husema radio where he hosted a weekly programme and other Kikuyu vernacular radio stations.

He has associated himself with a Mau Mau veterans’ organisation led by James Mahuria, whose members are said to be children of verified Mau Mau fighters and are reportedly seeking compensation from the UK government for colonial era atrocities.

Kamunya, Mahuria and other leaders among them Prophet Paul Mwangi and Archbishop Johnson Mwai have repeatedly called for official recognition of the group and reparations for its members.

Known for blunt and memorable remarks, Kamunya often tells his followers that “the church must correct life, not just condemn it,” a phrase that captures his belief in faith anchored in practical living.

Whether praised as a bold reformist preacher or criticised as a controversial cleric businessman who claims to have fallen victim to a conman, Bishop George Kamunya remains a figure who continues to provoke debate, shaped as much by his Mau Mau heritage as by his modern pulpit.
