Bodyguard, Rebel Politician and Power Player: The Compressed Story of Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai

By Our Correspondent,Kitui

Nimrod Mbai was born on December 22, 1978 in Kitui County.

Mbai rose from a modest Ukambani background into one of the region’s most outspoken political figures, blending a long security career with a combative style in public life.

He was educated at Malatani Primary and Ikanga Boys before earning studies in political science, communication, and public policy at University of Nairobi and Kenyatta University.

Mbai joined the Administration Police in the 1990s, where he underwent rigorous police and VIP protection training and spent over two decades in service, including working closely as a security aide to the late Cabinet Minister Francis Nyenze.

During Kenya’s tense 2007–2008 post-election period as the bodyguard of the then government spokesman and now labour cabinet secretary Alfred Mutua,he evacuated the former electoral boss the late Samuel Kivuitu to state house,Nairobi where he went to announce the disputed win of President Mwai Kibaki against Raila Odinga.

The incident which took place amid chaos, reflected Mbai’s proximity to high stakes national moments.

After leaving police work, Mbai transitioned through county administration as a chief officer in Machakos county before he plunged into elective politics in 2017.

He won the Kitui East parliamentary seat and later retained it in 2022 on the ticket of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) led by President William Ruto.

In a region traditionally loyal to Kalonzo Musyoka and his Wiper Democratic Movement, Mbai’s refusal to defect marked him as a political rebel who chose national alignment over regional loyalty, arguing it would better deliver development to his constituents.

His career has been punctuated by controversy and blunt rhetoric, including public backlash over incendiary remarks and an incident in Kitengela where he was reported to have confronted and assaulted a Kenya Power technician during a disconnection dispute, reinforcing his image as both confrontational and unapologetic.

Yet at home in Kitui East, he retains strong grassroots backing, credited with pushing infrastructure, water access, education support, and empowerment programs, while remaining an active voice on security matters in Parliament.

Known for his love of Kamba music and cultural ties, Mbai mixes hardline politics with local identity, crafting a persona that resonates with supporters even as it attracts critics.

His journey, from disciplined police officer and VIP bodyguard to controversial lawmaker captures the tensions of modern Kenyan politics, where loyalty, ambition, and defiance intersect.

Personal tragedy recently brought him back into national focus following the reported death of his mother in a road accident, drawing sympathy across political divides and adding a human dimension to a figure often defined by his firebrand public image.
