An early morning boda boda ride today turned dramatic after a brave rider was violently attacked by armed robbers in Machakos town, but he overpowered them.
His bravery led him to disarm a pistol from them.
Police later on recovered the pistol which was loaded.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight near Machakos Bus Park, where the rider (name withheld) was approached by three men posing as passengers.
They requested to be ferried to a church near Machakos Girls High School.
According to police, the trio turned violent upon reaching a dark stretch of road in Kiambwa Village.
The rider was forced off his motorcycle and assaulted with a pistol before being robbed of his mobile phone worth Sh18 000, cash totaling to Sh1500 and personal belongings.
In a daring move during the scuffle, the victim managed to grab the firearm and throw it into a nearby homestead while raising alarm, forcing the attackers to flee with the motorcycle towards Kitui Road.
Police officers, led by senior detectives from Machakos Police Station, swiftly responded to the scene.
A search led to the recovery of a Jericho pistol loaded with six rounds of ammunition from the indicated homestead.
Crime scene investigators processed the area as part of ongoing investigations.
The injured rider was rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital, where he received treatment and was reported to be in stable condition.
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects, who remain at large, and investigations are ongoing.
Police have urged members of the public, especially night operators, to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to security agencies promptly.
