An angry resident of Busia County has raised the alarm over what they described as systematic looting of public resources, warning that the county is being plundered through questionable legal payments.
Speaking to Scoop News Agency, the resident claimed that insiders had uncovered plans to pay a private lawyer as much as Sh50 million for legal work allegedly done for the county government work that, according to preliminary findings, was not even worth Sh100,000.
“Busia County is being looted in broad daylight, and this must stop,” the resident said. “Something must be done immediately to halt these outrageous payments of lawyers’ fees.”
The whistleblower alleged that investigations revealed glaring discrepancies between the value of the legal services rendered and the amounts being demanded.
Even more troubling, they claimed, was that some county officials had reportedly held meetings and agreed that certain individuals should be paid up to Sh20 million, despite the minimal nature of the work involved.
“This is not just negligence; it is betrayal of the people of Busia,” the resident added.
“Public money meant for development, schools, and hospitals is being diverted through inflated legal claims.”
The claims have sparked fresh calls for scrutiny of legal contracts and payments within the county, with residents urging oversight agencies to step in, audit all pending legal fees, and hold any culpable officials to account.
As pressure mounts, residents say they will continue to speak out until transparency is restored and what they term as the ‘legal fees racket’ at the county is decisively dismantled.
