Tension has gripped parts of Nyatike,Migori county after a group of armed robbers stormed a mining site in a violent raid and left four Chinese nationals seriously injured.
Police at Macalder Police Station said that the incident occurred at around 8:00 p.m. yesterday when six assailants armed with crude weapons invaded a mining camp operated by a private company within the area.
The attackers reportedly gained access by jumping over the perimeter fence before descending on residential quarters occupied by Chinese workers.
They assaulted the victims and ransacked the houses.
The victims sustained multiple and serious injuries.
The victims included a 60 year old man who suffered widespread bodily injuries, a 53 year old with injuries to the back, neck, head, and finger, a 49 year old with head and hand injuries, and a 34 year old who sustained a deep cut to the back.
A translator attached to the company also lost his Huawei mobile phone during the incident, though he escaped physical harm.
Police officers responded swiftly to a distress call and rushed to the scene, where they found Administration Police Service (APS) officers who had attempted to pursue the attackers.
However, the suspects managed to escape under the cover of darkness.
All injured victims were rushed to Life Care Hospital Migori Branch, where they are currently receiving treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
Security personnel combed the area following the attack, but no arrests have been made so far.
