Tension rocked Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Thunguri Church on Sunday morning after a confrontation between congregants and senior clergy prevented a planned worship service from taking place.
The incident was reported to police at around 9:30 a.m. by Gerald Muriithi Mwangi, the Bishop of ACK Nyeri West Diocese who indicated that he arrived at the Church accompanied by other diocesan clergy to lead the Sunday service but together with his delegation they were unable to access the church compound after members reportedly closed the main gate to block their entry.

Police officers who visited the scene established that the standoff stemmed from an ongoing leadership dispute within the church.
Congregants are said to be backing Pastor Ayub Nderitu, who is alleged to have been interdicted by the bishop, while the diocesan leadership supports Pastor Ernest Kibue, whose appointment is being resisted by the local church members.
With the situation deemed unfavourable, Bishop Mwangi and his team eventually left the area.
Police advised both factions to pursue dialogue and other amicable means to resolve the dispute.
Police confirmed that no violence or disorder was witnessed during or after the incident.
The disrupted service officially ended at about 1:00 p.m.
