Court Allows Withdrawal of Hate Speech Case Against MP Salasya

By Elizabeth Were,Nairobi.

A Nairobi Court on Monday allowed the withdrawal of a hate speech case against Mumias East MP Peter Salasya .

This is after he complied with conditions set by the court.

Delivering the ruling,a Milimani court magistrate Paul Mutai said the court found that there was sufficient evidence showing Salasya had taken part in peace campaigns that reached at least 1,000 people.

The court was also informed that the MP is actively running a peace initiative on social media.

Mutai noted that the peace efforts were ongoing and that Salasya had committed to sustaining the campaign.

The court further ordered the withdrawal of the charges under the relevant provisions of the law.

Magistrate Mutai earlier did not withdraw the case insisting that Salasya first meet specific conditions, including issuing a public apology and participating in a social media peace campaign.

The application to withdraw the case was made by the Director of Public Prosecutions through prosecutor Nora Achieng.

Achieng informed the court that the matter had been resolved through an agreement between the accused and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).
