By Our Reporter,Kerugoya

Daniel Karaba, a veteran Kenyan politician and educationist who died yesterday was born in 1948 in Kiamaina village in Kirinyaga County.

Before entering politics, Karaba built a distinguished career in the education sector, earning widespread respect as a teacher, principal, and education leader.

His professional journey saw him serve as principal in several notable institutions, including Kagumo High School, Highway Secondary School, Kianyaga High School, Kirimara High School, and Njegas Secondary School.

He also served as Chair of the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) from 1984 to 1998, where he played a key role in shaping education leadership in the country.

Popularly known as “Mwalimu,” Karaba transitioned into politics in 2002, winning the Kirinyaga Central (formerly Kerugoya-Kutus) parliamentary seat on a National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) ticket.

During his tenure in the 9th Parliament, he leveraged his background in education to champion sector reforms and served as Chair of the Parliamentary Education Committee.

In the 2007 general election, he lost the seat to John Ngata Kariuki, the long serving chairman of Sarova Hotels.

He successfully challenged Ngata’s win in court but sadly lost in the ensuing by-election in 2010 to newcomer Land Surveyor Gachoki Gitari.

Karaba returned to elective politics in 2013, successfully contesting for the Kirinyaga County senatorial seat under The National Alliance (TNA) ticket.

He won by a wide margin, securing 215,977 votes.

As senator from 2013 to 2017, he once again chaired the Senate Education Committee in the 11th Parliament, continuing his strong advocacy for education reform and oversight.

Karaba, who also served as MP for Kirinyaga Central (formerly Kerugoya-Kutus), died at the age of 78, leaving behind a legacy defined by dedication to education and public service.
