A section of residents from Matungulu Constituency in Machakos County have accused officials at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices in Tala of denying them the opportunity to change their voter registration details.
The residents, drawn mainly from Joska, Malaa, Kantafu and Koma, claim that IEBC officials subjected them to what they termed as excessive and unnecessary verification questions, effectively locking them out of the voter transfer process.
Many of those affected say they are settlers who have lived and worked in the area for years and meet all legal requirements to register or transfer their voter details.
The grievances were voiced through local politician Paul Oluoch, who said the residents felt discriminated against and frustrated by the process.
He urged the electoral body to ensure fairness, transparency and equal treatment of all eligible voters, warning that such actions could undermine public confidence in the electoral system ahead of future polls.
Weighing in on the matter, Patrick Makau, the Member of Parliament for Mavoko and a declared aspirant for the Machakos gubernatorial seat in 2027, called on the IEBC to serve all Kenyans without bias.
Makau emphasized that both natives and settlers have equal constitutional rights and should be accorded the same respect and services by electoral officials.
The residents are now calling on the IEBC headquarters to intervene, investigate the allegations, and issue clear guidelines to ensure voter registration and transfer exercises are conducted smoothly and without discrimination across Machakos County.
