Quick action by students and teachers averted a potential disaster after a dormitory caught fire at Ruthagati Boys Secondary School in Mathira West,Nyeri county,police have confirmed.
According to an incident report recorded at Kiamachimbi Police Station yesterday evening,the alarm was raised via phone call by Agnes Kanja, the Chief of Ruthagati Location.
She eported that the school was on fire.
Police officers from Kiamachimbi, accompanied by DCI detectives, Scene of Crime personnel, and members of the Mathira West SubCounty Security Team led by the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), rushed to the scene.
Investigators established that Lenana Dormitory had caught fire, but the flames were contained by students and teachers before causing major damage.
A fire brigade from Karatina also responded as a precaution.
A breakthrough came after officers reviewed CCTV footage, which allegedly showed one student keeping watch while another entered the dormitory through a window with his face concealed.
The two suspects, both Form Three students aged 16 and 17, were apprehended and later led police to other alleged accomplices.
Police say the suspects admitted to having planned a strike on January 24, 2026, which initially failed, before the attempted arson incident.
In total, ten students, all aged between 15 and 17 years, were arrested in connection with the incident and escorted to Kiamachimbi Police Station.
