By Our Reporter,Kisii
Tension gripped Magena Township on Sunday night after violent unrest erupted at Magena Boys High School.
The incident left seven dormitories and a posho mill burnt, several classrooms vandalized, and over 200 students unaccounted for.
According to a police incident report filed at Magena Police station at night, the disturbance was first reported by David Momanyi, a watchman at the school, who alerted officers that students were threatening to burn down the institution.
Police officers led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Magena rushed to the scene only to find that sections of the school were already on fire.
On noticing the police, the students reportedly turned violent, pelting officers with stones before law enforcement managed to contain the situation.
Reinforcements soon arrived, including the SubCounty Police Commander (SCPC), the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Kenyenya, and DCI officers, as efforts intensified to restore calm.
Authorities confirmed that six students sustained minor injuries and were admitted for treatment.
No serious injuries were reported during the melee.
Preliminary assessments indicate that seven dormitories and a posho mill were completely destroyed, while several classroom window panes were smashed.
The total value of the damage is yet to be established.
Kisii County Government Fire Brigade later arrived and successfully extinguished the fire.
Out of an estimated 650 students, police have so far accounted for 422, with approximately 228 students still missing as efforts to trace them continue.
Investigations into the cause of the unrest and arson have commenced.
