The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has agreed to Zambia’s request to enhance security for cross border truck drivers operating on its territory, according to a statement released on Saturday.
The agreement was outlined in a communique issued following the 14th DRC-Zambia Joint Permanent Commission on Defense and Security meeting, during which the DRC committed to enhancing security for cross border truck drivers.
The communique urged the DRC to ensure that attacks on cross border truck drivers are reported in all affected areas and that security measures are strengthened as soon as possible.
“Regarding the facilitation of commerce and trade, the commission took note of the security challenges faced by international truck drivers while transiting through the DRC and transporting goods in view of recent attacks,” the communique said.
Earlier this week, the Zambian government formally requested the DRC to put in place measures to ensure the safety of cross border truck drivers following a spate of attacks in the country.
The two countries also emphasized the need to ensure that international trade is not disrupted by attacks on truck drivers
