Elderly woman aged 96 years old perishes in night fire in Nakuru

Nakuru.

A tragic fire incident has claimed the life of a 96 year old woman in Murunyu area, Nakuru county on Monday night.

According to area police the incident occured after her iron sheet house was razed down during the night.

According to a police report filed at Githioro Police Station, the incident was reported on February 10, 2026, at 10:30d, a.m. by the Assistant Chief of Murunyu Sub-Location.

She stated that Frederick Maina Mwangi had called to inform her that the house occupied by their grandmother had burnt down.

Officers from Murunyu Police Post, Githioro Police Station, DCI Nakuru North, and Scene of Crime personnel visited the scene .

Police established that the deceased, identified as Ngendo Mwangi, was burnt inside her mabati house beyond recognition.

Her remains were discovered near the doorway, suggesting she may have attempted to escape.

Investigations revealed that the elderly woman lived alone in the house.

The plot belongs to her step son,Frederick Mwangi, who had been hosting her.

He told police that he served her supper at around 9:30 p.m. the previous night and that she appeared to be in good health.

The deceased had no biological children.

The scene was fully documented by Scene of Crime officers, and the remains were transferred to Kwa Jack Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is pending.
Police say investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing under DCI Nakuru North.
