Nine Ethiopian nationals being held at a police facility in Lang’ata, Nairobi on Thursday launched a hunger strike in protest over what they described as prolonged detention and delays in their repatriation to their home country.
Police confirmed that the detainees refused to take their supper, formally beginning a hunger strike while in custody.
The individuals, all identified as being Ethiopians were named as Taraken Mradi, Abante Alakise, Daniel Abanje, Jama Salama, Samuel Damage, Adan Hasan, Tashame Nakala, Emmanuel Abusa and Ashef Adomaso.
Police indicated that the group complained they had stayed in police cells for an extended period and demanded immediate repatriation back to Ethiopia.
The detainees reportedly insisted they would not eat until action is taken to facilitate their return.
Police noted that efforts have already been made to fast track the repatriation process through the immigration department, but the process had not yet been successful by Thursday.
Despite the protest, police confirmed that all nine detainees remain in stable condition.
Officers who sought anonymity also stated that the individuals have been in custody for a considerable period and that urgent attention is required to resolve their situation and facilitate their removal from the country through the appropriate immigration channels.
