The incident was reported on Sunday afternoon at Mbita Police Station by the area chief, Denis Okelo, after fishermen at Litare Beach spotted a box floating in the waters of Lake Victoria.
Upon closer inspection, the box was found to contain objects resembling bombs.
Acting swiftly on the report, police officers from Mbita Police Station, together with officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mbita, rushed to the scene, located approximately 15 kilometres from Rusinga Island.
A search and preliminary assessment conducted at the scene led to the recovery of six suspected propellant bombs and one round of ammunition of unknown calibre.
The area was immediately secured as a safety precaution, with officers restricting access to prevent any potential danger to residents and fishermen.
Police have since placed the scene under tight security as they await bomb disposal experts from the Nyanza Region to examine and safely neutralize the suspected explosives.
Authorities have launched investigations to determine the origin of the items and how they ended up in the lake.
No injuries were reported during the incident, but the discovery has raised serious security concerns among locals who rely on the lake for their daily livelihoods.
