Former Kamukunji Member of Parliament Simon Mbugua has formally re-emerged on the political scene and is positioning himself for a comeback bid for the Kamukunji parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election.
Mbugua, who previously represented Kamukunji and later served as a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) between 2017 and 2022, has in recent months intensified his engagements on the ground, fuelling speculation that he is preparing to challenge the incumbent MP Yusuf Hassan.
In November 2025, Mbugua graduated with his second Master’s degree in Strategic Management from Kenya Methodist University (KeMU), adding to his academic credentials.
Reflecting on the achievement, he described the journey as “a blend of rigorous study, thought-provoking projects and countless late nights, all driven by a passion for turning ideas into success.”
Through his social media platforms, Mbugua publicly thanked his mentors, lecturers and classmates for their support, noting that continuous learning remains central to his leadership philosophy.
Beyond academia, Mbugua has stepped up community based initiatives in Kamukunji.
In December 2025, he sponsored a series of social activities, including a well attended youth football tournament aimed at nurturing talent and promoting positive engagement among young people.
Winners at the colourful event walked away with assorted prizes, with residents describing the initiative as a morale booster for the constituency’s youth.
Mbugua has also disclosed plans to further his studies, indicating that he intends to pursue a PhD in business and leadership-related studies, with international exposure forming part of his long-term academic ambitions.
Currently, he serves as the Chairman of the Policyholders Compensation Fund (PCF), a state corporation mandated to compensate policyholders of insurance companies declared insolvent.
His role at PCF has kept him active in public service and policy circles.
The anticipated contest sets the stage for a high profile political battle with Yusuf Hassan, a former international journalist who previously worked with global media houses including the BBC and is associated with the online publication Eastleigh Voice.
Hassan has held the Kamukunji seat since 2017.
With early alignments already taking shape, Kamukunji is shaping up to be one of Nairobi’s most closely watched constituencies as the 2027 elections draw nearer.
