Ronald Karauri is a Kenyan businessman, former commercial pilot and politician whose career has moved seamlessly from aviation and corporate leadership into elective politics.
Currently in his mid 50’s, Karauri is serving as the Member of Parliament for Kasarani Constituency in Nairobi County, having won the seat in the 2022 General Election as an independent candidate.
He became the first independent MP elected in Nairobi in that parliamentary term.
Born in Meru County in eastern Kenya, Karauri hails from the Meru ethnic community that predominantly inhabits the fertile slopes surrounding Mount Kenya.
Politics and public service were not foreign concepts in his upbringing.
He is the son of Adams Karauri, a former Member of Parliament and Assistant Minister for Education during the era of Daniel arap Moi, an influence that would later shape his own interest in leadership and governance.

Before entering politics, Karauri trained as a commercial pilot and spent over a decade flying for Kenya Airways, a career that earned him a reputation for discipline, precision and calm decision making.
He later transitioned fully into business and rose to continental prominence as the CEO and co-founder of SportPesa, one of East Africa’s most influential sports betting firms.
Under his stewardship, the company became widely known for its aggressive sports sponsorships, particularly in football, and its youth focused branding.

Karauri’s entry into elective politics in 2022 was driven, by his own account, by a desire to translate private sector efficiency into public service.
As MP, he has pushed initiatives centered on youth empowerment, sports development, bursaries, and support for small businesses, while frequently arguing that urban constituencies require leaders who understand both boardroom economics and grassroots realities.
Supporters credit him with a hands on approach and with leveraging private partnerships to supplement limited public funds in Kasarani.
His career has not been without controversy.

His association with SportPesa inevitably followed him into politics, especially during periods when the betting industry clashed with government over taxation, regulation and licensing.
Critics have also questioned the broader social impact of betting firms, concerns Karauri has repeatedly addressed by emphasizing responsible gaming and the company’s role in sports funding and employment creation.
Inspired largely by his father’s political journey and by what he describes as Nairobi’s untapped potential, Karauri has openly expressed ambitions beyond Kasarani, including a desire to run for Governor of Nairobi in 2027.
He argues that the city requires firm leadership, transparent revenue management, modern transport planning, youth driven job creation and a clean, technology enabled county government.
His vision for Nairobi focuses on safer neighborhoods, functional public services, expanded sports and creative spaces for young people, and closer collaboration between county government and the private sector.

Among his memorable remarks is his frequent assertion that “leadership is not about noise but results,” a line he uses to contrast performance based politics with rhetoric.
Married and known to keep his family life largely private, Karauri continues to balance his public duties with business interests and philanthropy, positioning himself as a symbol of Kenya’s evolving political class drawn from professional and entrepreneurial backgrounds.
