From Sukumawiki to Power: The Relentless Rise of Simba Arati and the Gusii Political Power

By Our Reporter,Kisii

Paul Simba Arati, the Kisii Governor was born on November 28, 1981and is one of Kenya’s most rising political figures.

He has risen from the backstreets of Nairobi to the apex of county and ODM party politics.

Arati in a past interview with Daily News Kenya-International he said that he was raised in Kisii County and educated at Suneka High School

From Suneka High School he moved to Nairobi where like many other youths life was difficult for him before he enrolled at the Kenya Polytechnic (now the Technical University of Kenya).

At Kenya Polytechnic he trained in tourism management.

He survived by hawking sukumawiki in Kawangware, Riruta and surrounding satellite estates,an experience he has never disowned and often cites as the foundation of his grassroots political identity.

It was in Nairobi that Arati’s political consciousness was forged.

Student leadership at college introduced him to mobilisation, while later election as a Nairobi city councillor sharpened his taste for power and public influence.

In 2013, riding on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) wave led by Raila Odinga, Arati stunned many by winning the Dagoretti North parliamentary seat.

He defended it in 2017, entrenching himself as a street smart, combative and highly visible legislator.

His political survival across multiple election cycles in Dagoretti North was built on relentless ground presence, youth mobilisation and a knack for turning his “sukumawiki past” into a badge of authenticity rather than shame.

Personally, Arati’s life also drew public fascination.

He married May, a Chinese national he met while studying in China, a union that symbolised his international exposure and often featured prominently in his campaigns, with his wife endearing herself to voters by addressing rallies in fluent Ekegusii.

Academically, Arati went on to study business management in China and later earned a master’s degree in international relations, reinforcing his image as a politician who blended street experience with global outlook.

After nearly a decade in Nairobi politics, Arati made a bold and risky move by ecamping to Kisii politics.

In 2022, he returned home to contest the Kisii governorship, facing seasoned local heavyweights.

Against expectations, he won, redefining Gusii politics and cementing himself as a bridge between national opposition politics and county power.

His victory elevated him from MP to a regional kingpin, with influence stretching well beyond Kisii County.

Throughout his career, Arati’s loyalty to ODM has been unwavering.

He stood firmly with the late ODM leader Raila Odinga during moments of political turbulence and aligned himself closely with party insiders, including Oburu Odinga.

His loyalty paid off when he rose to become one of ODM’s deputy party leaders, positioning him as second in command and a key strategist within the opposition.

For years, he also acted as a de facto Gusii spokesperson within ODM circles, a role that amplified his regional clout.

That influence, however, has recently faced a political test.

The symbolic Gusii spokesperson role has now been bequeathed to Fred Matiang’i, a move widely interpreted as a recalibration of Gusii power dynamics within ODM and the broader opposition.

The shift dents Arati’s exclusive grip on Gusii political representation but does not erase his authority as governor or his standing in ODM’s top hierarchy.

Instead, it sets the stage for a subtle but significant contest for influence ahead of future national realignments.

Known for his blunt language, populist rhetoric and memorable one liners, Simba Arati remains a polarising but undeniable force.

From selling sukumawiki to commanding county and party power, his story is one of survival, ambition and calculated loyalty,an enduring reminder that in Kenyan politics, the road from the street to the summit is brutal, but not impossible.
