From TV Screens to Rally Tracks: Pauline Shegu’s Perseverance Journey to Motor Sport

By Our Motor Sport Reporter

Pauline Shegu, a veteran Kenyan media personality turned rally driver, has built a unique career that blends journalism, government communication and motorsport.

She has emerged as one of the country’s most prominent female figures in rallying.

Shegu was born in 1977 in Nairobi and raised partly in Kisumu due to her father’s police work.

She completed her secondary education in Nairobi before financial challenges forced her into small sscale business to support her family, an experience she says shaped her resilience.

Aftre her secondary education,Shegu trained in journalism at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication.

Later on she launched a successful career at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) where she became a familiar Swahili news anchor, before transitioning into government public relations and strategic communications, serving in senior roles including at the Geothermal Development Company and within the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports.

Her entry into rallying as she told DNK-International recently was unconventional, inspired by a life threatening carjacking incident that pushed her toward motorsport, eventually rising through inter-media competitions and into the Kenya National Rally Championship.

With over 15 years in rallying, Shegu has competed in multiple editions of the Safari Rally.

Her participation in the sport has steadily made her to gain recognition and secure sponsorships that have enabled her to compete at higher levels.

She has recorded notable successes including podium finishes in recent years as part of one of Kenya’s leading all women rally crews, alongside her co-driver Lilian Ayuku, with whom she has built a strong partnership on the demanding rally circuit.

Although during the recent Safari rally held in Naivasha last week they were unable to finish the rally after their car was stoned by some rally fans.

Despite operating in a costly and male dominated sport, Shegu has remained consistent, often highlighting the challenges of funding and advocating for greater support and inclusion of women in motorsport.

Her efforts have earned her national recognition, including state honors for her contributions to communication and sport.

In the 2026 Safari Rally, she returned to Naivasha with renewed determination under strong sponsorship backing, signaling her growing stature in the sport.

Looking ahead, Shegu says that she aims to expand her rallying footprint beyond Kenya while mentoring young women to join motorsport, driven by her belief that persistence and boldness open doors.

Her journey from the newsroom to the rally track continues to inspire, positioning her as a trailblazer redefining possibilities for women in Kenya’s sporting landscape.
