From Village Roots to National Influence: The Enduring Power of Zipporah Kittony

Veteran politician and women’s rights champion Zipporah Kittony was born in 1943 in Baringo County.

She has built a legacy that spans grassroots activism, national and business leadership that has cemented her place as one of the country’s most influential female figures.

Now in her 80s, Kittony’s journey reflects determination, proximity to power, and a lifelong commitment to uplifting women across Kenya.

She was raised in a large Christian family as the fifth of twelve children.

Kittony attended Kapropita Primary School before proceeding to Kapsabet Girls High School, at a time when education opportunities for girls were limited.

She later trained as a teacher and briefly worked in the profession before shifting to community development, where she joined the Family Planning Association of Kenya, focusing on reproductive health education for women.

Her early exposure to grassroots mobilization laid the foundation for her future leadership path.

During a talk with DNK-International recently, she said that her professional journey expanded regionally when she served as a senior programmes officer with the World Assembly of Youth for East and Central Africa in the 1970s.

She later ventured into farming and agribusiness, becoming a successful large scale farmer in Trans Nzoia demonstrating her belief in economic empowerment as a tool for independence.

Kittony rose to national prominence through her leadership of the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization, where she served as national chairperson from 1996 to 2006.

During her tenure, she transformed the organization into a powerful grassroots movement advocating for women’s economic empowerment, leadership training, maternal health, and the eradication of harmful cultural practices.

Her work significantly contributed to increasing women’s participation in leadership and public life across Kenya.

Kittony’s entry into formal politics was deeply influenced by the late second President, Daniel arap Moi.She regarded him as both a mentor and father figure.

In 1988, Moi nominated her to Parliament, a position she held for nearly two decades until 2007, making her one of the longest serving nominated legislators in Kenya’s history.

Her close relationship with Moi placed her at the center of political power during his administration, where she championed social and gender issues.

Kittony’s political relevance extended beyond Moi’s era, as she maintained working relationships with successive presidents, including Mwai Kibaki, Uhuru Kenyatta, and William Ruto.

Though she did not always hold executive positions in these administrations, she remained a respected elder stateswoman and a key figure within the KANU party.

Between 2013 and 2017, she served as a nominated Senator, continuing her advocacy for inclusive governance and women’s rights.

In her personal life, she is married to Paul Kittony, and together they have three children, maintaining a family that has also been active in business and public affairs.

Beyond politics, her business interests particularly in agriculture have reinforced her long standing message on self reliance and economic empowerment.

Throughout her career, Kittony has consistently championed the advancement of women, mentoring emerging leaders and pushing for greater inclusion in decision making spaces.

Her leadership has helped shape generations of women leaders who now occupy key roles in government, business, and civil society.

Known for her candid and sometimes unconventional views, she once stirred national debate by suggesting that rigid gender quotas could limit rather than expand opportunities for women, underscoring her belief in merit and capacity.

Her memorable remarks have often emphasized discipline, independence, and the need for women to take charge of their destinies, principles she has embodied throughout her life.

From humble beginnings in rural Baringo to the corridors of power in Nairobi,Kittony’s story remains a powerful testament to resilience, influence, and an unwavering commitment to transforming society through women’s empowerment.
