Fuel Spill in Awasi

An oil spill incident was reported in Awasi, Nyando,Kisumu county after a fuel tanker overturned along the highway.

According to a report filed at Awasi Police Station, the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday around 4:00 a.m.

The tanker, registration number KCC 902X, was being driven by Peter Kimani from Mombasa to Kampala.

It was loaded with approximately 40,000 litres of super petrol.

Police reports indicate that upon reaching Awasi Shopping Centre about 200 meters from the police station, the driver parked the vehicle by the roadside facing the Kisumu direction to rest.

While the driver was asleep, the tanker reportedly slipped and fell onto its right side, causing fuel seals to break and petrol to spill.

Officers from Awasi Police Station responded promptly, securing the area and preventing members of the public from siphoning the spilled fuel.

The Kisumu County fire Brigade was alerted and arrived at the scene on standby to manage any potential fire outbreak.

Additional reinforcement was provided by officers from Ahero Police Station.

Authorities confirmed that no injuries or fire incidents were recorded.

The tanker was later recovered, and the remaining fuel safely transferred to a rescue tanker.

The road was cleared, and the vehicle was towed to the police station pending mechanical inspection.
