A 71 year old Israeli national has been arrested in Mtwapa,Kilifi county after allegedly tearing a Kenyan banknote and throwing the pieces out of a moving matatu following a dispute over fare.
According to a report filed at the Tourist Police Unit (TP) Mtwapa Base yesterday,The report was made by Dominick Ochieng, who stated that he was travelling in a public service vehicle (PSV) matatu plying the Mtwapa–Mombasa route.
Upon reaching the Bombolulu area, a foreign passenger of European origin seated next to him reportedly engaged the conductor in a heated argument over fare.
In apparent anger, the man allegedly took a Sh100 note he was holding, tore it into several pieces, and threw them through the window while the vehicle was in motion.
The incident angered other passengers, who directed the driver to proceed to Mtwapa Police Station to report the matter.
One piece of the mutilated currency was recovered and handed over to police as evidence.
The suspect, identified as Eliany Shalom and residing within Mtwapa township, was arrested and placed in custody.
Police indicated that he is expected to be arraigned in court and charged with the offence of mutilating currency contrary to Section 367(a) of the Penal Code.
