Peninnah Gathoni Wa Muchomba, commonly known as Gathoni Wamuchomba, is a prominent Kenyan journalist, entrepreneur and politician whose journey from humble beginnings to the halls of Parliament mirrors her bold and often controversial public persona.
She was born in 1975 in Komothai Ward, Githunguri Constituency, Kiambu County.
Wamuchomba excelled academically, topping her district in primary school before earning sponsorship to attend Precious Blood Secondary School in Riruta,Nairobi and later Makuyu Secondary School.
She went on to study at the University of Nairobi, where she earned a Bachelor of Education (Arts) and a Master of Arts in Communication.
Wamuchomba’s professional life began in the media while she was still a student, working for Kameme FM and later Inooro FM, where she hosted popular vernacular shows and became known as the “Queen of Vernacular Radio.”
Before entering politics, she also founded Utugi TV, a Kikuyu language digital station focused on agricultural content and established a media training institution.
Her political career took off in 2017, when she was elected Kiambu County Women Representative on a Jubilee Party ticket, garnering over 900,000 votes the third highest total in that general election behind President Uhuru Kenyatta and the late Raila Odinga.
In 2022, she switched to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and was elected Member of Parliament for Githunguri Constituency, joining Kenya’s 13th Parliament.
Wamuchomba’s political manoeuvring has drawn wide attention.
Early in her career she was a visible supporter of President Uhuru Kenyatta, but later aligned with William Ruto ahead of the 2022 elections as she pursued the MP seat.
After Ruto’s rise to the presidency, she became part of a vocal faction within the UDA critical of aspects of government policy, including contentious issues like the Finance Bill 2024, and has at times called out members of the Kenya Kwanza government, including then Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Following Gachagua’s impeachment, she slowly distanced herself from his Democracy for Citizens Party and her return to engagement with the UDA core.

Most recently she was present at a UDA National Governing Council meeting at State House, Nairobi where she reaffirmed support for President Ruto’s 2027 reelection bid, underscoring her continued influence in national politics.
As an MP, Wamuchomba has sponsored motions and legislation addressing social issues and policy reforms, earning recognition for her outspokenness and advocacy.
Her work has been celebrated with awards including Best MP in Kenya and Best MP in Kiambu County at the Jamhuri 2024 Awards, and other accolades highlighting her leadership and service to constituents.
Known for her fearless public remarks and sharp rhetoric, Wamuchomba continues to shape debate in Kenya’s political sphere, pushing for generational leadership and reforms while navigating complex party dynamics as the country heads toward the 2027 general elections.
