Police in Nyeri County have arrested a university student in connection with the murder of a young college student in Karatina, as investigations into the incident intensify.

According to a follow-up report filed at Karatina Police Station, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Mathira East moved swiftly to apprehend the suspect, identified as Vincent Bett Kibiwot, a fourth-year Political Science student at Karatina University.

The suspect was arrested in the Kagochi area after police linked him to the murder of Sheila Chebet, a first-year student at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), Nyeri Campus.

During interrogation, Kibiwot reportedly admitted that he was with the deceased on the night of March 28, 2026. He told investigators that they had been drinking at a local entertainment spot in Karatina town before proceeding to a friend’s house in Rafina Estate.

He further claimed that a disagreement arose between them, prompting him to escort the deceased towards Karatina Stage.

On the way, he alleged that they were attacked by three unknown men, forcing him to flee and leave the victim behind.

The suspect also claimed that the attackers robbed him of his mobile phone, but he managed to escape with the deceased’s Redmi phone, which was later recovered from him at the time of his arrest.

Police say the suspect’s account is under scrutiny as detectives work to verify his claims and establish the exact sequence of events leading to Sheila Chebet’s death.

The deceased’s father, Kennedy Korir, has been notified and is reportedly travelling from Kericho County.
