What began as a routine stock theft complaint has erupted into a startling police scandal after an officer was allegedly found sleeping inside a complainant’s compound at midnight.
According to an entry recorded at Bumula Police station, Asisa Juma, a resident of Mateka Market, reported that his she goat was stolen from his homestead on the night of January 15–16, 2026.
After searching unsuccessfully through nearby markets, Juma said he sought help from a witch doctor to trace the missing animal.
Days later, at around 12.00 a.m. on January 20, Juma was reportedly alerted by coughing sounds outside his home.
On checking, he allegedly found Police ConstablenKevin Abuga of Khasoko Police Post asleep under a tree within his compound and appearing distressed.
The officer is said to have pleaded with members of the public not to harm him and allegedly offered to pay three times the value of the stolen goat, triggering suspicion and outrage among locals.
Senior officers including the OCPD Kimaeti, the DCIO and the OCS Bumula visited the scene shortly after.
Police have confirmed the case is Pending Under with the DCIO Bumula leading inquiries.
The strange incident has left residents stunned and renewed public debate over police conduct and accountability in rural communities.
