Vihiga County’s Senator Godfrey Atieno Osotsi, currently serving as Deputy Party Leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has emerged as one of Western Kenya’s most influential political figures.
He blends technocratic experience with grassroots mobilization as he positions himself for the 2027 Vihiga gubernatorial contest.
Elected as Senator in August 2022 on an ODM ticket, Osotsi’s journey from ICT professional to seasoned legislator reflects a calculated rise through Kenya’s political ranks.
A native of Emusenjeli village in Vihiga County (part of the larger Luhya community), Osotsi comes from a sub region where the Luyia identity thrives though specific sub-tribal affiliations (such as Banyore, Maragoli, or Tiriki) are often locally recognized but not always publicly documented.
He’s from Bunyore sub tribe.
His early life in Vihiga shaped a worldview that prioritised public service and community advancement.
Osotsi’s education is anchored in technology and management.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Egerton University, an Executive MBA from JKUAT, and a Master’s in Information Technology Management from Sunderland University, UK.
Before politics, he built his career in the tech sector, serving as Head of ICT at the Energy Regulatory Board, Head of ICT at Davis & Shirtliff, and CEO/Chief Trainer at Businet Systems Limited—roles that honed his leadership, organisational, and oversight skills.
His political experience began with his nomination to the National Assembly in 2013, where he served on key committees and championed initiatives like the establishment of sports academies across constituencies.
He also rose to serve as Secretary General of the Amani National Congress (ANC) from 2015 to 2017, steering party strategy before joining ODM.
The party was then led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi before he folded it to join President William Ruto’s UDA party.
As Senator, Osotsi chairs the Senate Committee on County Public Investments and Special Funds, a powerful oversight role that sees him scrutinise how devolved funds are used and advocate for transparency and accountability, efforts that have won both praise and criticism.
Beyond finance, he contributes to ICT, trade, tourism and infrastructure debates, reflecting his broad policy engagement.
His political successes include consolidating ODM’s foothold in Vihiga during the 2022 elections, when he and Governor Wilber Ottichilo both won on the party’s ticket and later asserting Western Kenya’s significance to ODM’s national strategy, pushing back against claims that the party’s influence was dimming in the region.
In August 2024, amid a reshuffle of ODM leadership, Osotsi was appointed one of three Deputy Party Leaders, alongside Governors Simba Arati (Kisii) and Abdulswamad Nassir (Mombasa).
The position elevated his national profile as ODM sought to broaden its leadership base after several senior figures left to join the government.
Osotsi’s influence within the Luhya region stems from his legislative work, party leadership role, and ability to navigate ethnic and political dynamics by articulating local priorities within a national platform.
At the national level, his voice has grown louder on matters of governance, devolution and political conduct, especially as Kenya’s political landscape evolves post Raila Odinga.
Following the death of ODM’s long time leader Raila Odinga last year,Osotsi continues as Deputy under the new party leader, Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, signalling continuity in party loyalty and strategic collaboration across regions.
Looking ahead to the 2027 gubernatorial race, Osotsi is widely seen as one of the early frontrunners for the Vihiga Governor seat, having officially declared his bid and framed his campaign around deepening development and representing the county’s aspirations.
His chances hinge on his ability to unite local constituencies, translate his legislative record into executive leadership appeal, and outmaneuver strong competitors including MPs and civil society figures.
Osotsi’s memorable public remarks often underscore unity, respect for democratic processes, and constructive engagement, which he voiced during tense local episodes such as when he condemned heckling at a presidential event in Vihiga, urging dignity and compensation for affected traders.
He’s also been seen leaning towards the wing that supports the party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and has told those opposed to Sifuna like Suna East MP Junet Mohamed that the Luyia community where both Sifuna and him hail from have a bigger number and membership in ODM than Somali community that Junet is a member.
As Kenya navigates its post Raila political era, Godfrey Osotsi’s blend of technical expertise, parliamentary leadership and regional grounding positions him as a compelling figure in both Vihiga and national politics.
His next chapter, whether as governor or a strengthened party leader, will be shaped by his capacity to harness local support and articulate a vision that resonates beyond conventional political divides.
