South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit was born on September 13, 1951 in Akon, then part of Sudan.
Kiir is a South Sudanese soldier turned statesman who has led South Sudan as its President since the demise of its leader the late John Garang.
Garang perished on July 30,2005 in an helicopter crash as he returned home after holding a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni in Kampala,Uganda.

He’s been a central figure in the country’s liberation struggle, presiding over a nation still navigating the difficult path from war to stability.
Kiir was born into the Dinka community and grew up in a region shaped by marginalization and conflict.
His early exposure to war came when he joined the Anyanya Movement during the first Sudanese Civil War, marking the beginning of a lifelong military career.
He later became a founding member of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in 1983, during the Second Sudanese Civil War, where he served as a loyal deputy to the movement’s leader, Garang.

Kiir’s rise to power accelerated after Garang’s sudden death in 2005, when he assumed leadership of the SPLA and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), while also becoming First Vice President of Sudan, deputising Omar El Bashir,a position that was being held by Garang for the whole of Sudan.
His calm and less ideological approach contrasted with Garang’s charismatic leadership style, helping maintain unity within the movement at a critical time.
When South Sudan voted overwhelmingly for independence in 2011, Kiir became its first President, symbolizing the culmination of decades of struggle.

His Presidency, however, has been defined as much by conflicts as by achievements.
In 2013, political tensions between Kiir and his former deputy, Riek Machar, erupted into the devastating South Sudanese Civil War.
The war fractured the young nation along political and ethnic lines, leading to massive displacement and humanitarian crises.
Despite multiple peace agreements, including the 2018 revitalized peace deal, the country continues to face fragile stability, economic hardship, and governance challenges.

Throughout his leadership, Kiir has become known for a number of memorable and symbolic remarks that reflect both his authority and the struggles of nation building.
At independence, he declared, “We have waited too long for this day. Today we are free,” capturing the emotional culmination of decades of resistance.
During the height of internal conflict, he urged unity by stating, “Our diversity is our strength, not our weakness,” even as divisions deepened across the country.
In a notable anti-corruption stance early in his presidency, he wrote to government officials demanding the return of stolen public funds, warning that corruption threatened the very foundation of the new nation.
Kiir’s personal image has also become iconic.

Rarely seen without his black cowboy hat, reportedly a gift from former U.S. President George W. Bush,he projects a distinct and recognizable presence on the global stage.
Despite his often quiet demeanor, he has maintained firm control over South Sudan’s political and military structures, surviving internal party splits, armed rebellions, and international pressure.
In recent years, Kiir has overseen transitional arrangements aimed at unifying rival factions into a single government and army, though progress has been slow and at times uncertain.
Elections have been repeatedly postponed, reflecting ongoing concerns about security, constitutional reforms, and political readiness.
Nevertheless, Kiir continues to position himself as a stabilizing figure, emphasizing peace implementation and national reconciliation.
Salva Kiir’s legacy remains deeply complex.
To his supporters here in Juba who talked to DNK-International, he is the steadfast liberator who guided South Sudan to independence and preserved its sovereignty through turbulent times.
To his critics, he is a leader whose tenure has been marked by missed opportunities, prolonged conflict, and entrenched political power.
As South Sudan moves forward, Kiir’s role in shaping its history, both its triumphs and its trials remains undeniable.
