Heavy Rain Causes Havoc in Nairobi, Triggers Flooding

By Our Reporter,Nairobi.

Heavy rainfall on Friday night caused widespread disruption across parts of Nairobi, leaving several roads flooded and exposing the city’s struggling drainage infrastructure.

The downpour, which lasted for several hours, overwhelmed sewer and drainage systems in multiple neighborhoods, leading to flooding that slowed traffic and forced pedestrians to wade through waterlogged streets.

Some residents reported that blocked drainage channels worsened the situation, allowing storm water to accumulate rapidly.

The incident has sparked renewed criticism of the Nairobi County Government, with residents and local leaders accusing authorities of failing to properly maintain and repair damaged sewer and drainage systems.

Many have called on the county administration to urgently address the issue to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Urban planners and environmental advocates have long warned that poor drainage maintenance, illegal dumping of waste in sewers, and rapid urban development without adequate infrastructure upgrades are increasing the risk of flooding in the city during heavy rains.
Residents are now urging the county government to “wake up from its slumber” and take immediate action to unclog drainage systems, repair damaged sewer lines, and implement long-term solutions to improve storm water management in the capital.
