Infant Rescued Alive From Pit Latrine in Nyamira South, Probe Launched

A female infant was on Thursday morning rescued alive from a pit latrine at Nyabite Village in Bomanyanya Sub-location, Nyamira county.

The incident was a shocking one and was reported to police as an attempted murder.

According to a police report filed at Nyamaiya Police Station at 7:30am, the incident was reported by West Mugirango Location Chief Livingstone Momanyi.

The chief alerted officers after members of the public heard a child crying from inside a pit latrine.

Police officers from Nyamaiya Police Station, accompanied by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Nyamira South, rushed to the scene.

On arrival, they confirmed that a newborn baby girl was trapped inside a pit latrine estimated to be about 15 feet deep.

With the combined efforts of police officers and members of the public, the infant was successfully retrieved alive after frantic rescue efforts.

She was immediately escorted to Nyamira Referral Hospital, where she was admitted for treatment and care.

No suspect has been arrested so far, and police have opened investigations into the incident.

The incident has sparked outrage and concern among local residents, with calls for the person responsible to be traced and brought to justice.
