Inside the rise of Nairobi Police boss Issa Mohamed

By Our Reporter,Nairobi

Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud has steadily risen through the ranks to become one of the most trusted and firm figures within Kenya’s security apparatus.

He took charge of the capital city Nairobi recently from George Seda at a time the city has been experiencing heightened security sensitivity described by many Nairobians as emerging groups of thugs associated with some politicians in the country as we prepare towards general election next year.

Though details about his exact birthplace and early education remain largely private, his journey in the Kenya Police Service reflects decades of disciplined service, strategic deployments, and a reputation built on results rather than publicity.

Mohamud is believed to have joined the police service many years ago, rising through the ranks from junior police officer to the senior command positions.

His early command assignments included serving as a sub county police commander (OCPD) in Kabete, Nairobi, where he first encountered the complexities of urban policing.

He later served in Machakos before being deployed as County Police Commander in West Pokot, a region known for insecurity challenges including banditry and cross border crime.

In each posting, he developed a reputation as a firm, no-nonsense officer focused on restoring order and enforcing the law without compromise.

His defining moment came with his appointment as Western Regional Police Commander in 2025, where he oversaw a vast and often volatile region covering multiple counties. It was here that he cemented his name as a results driven commander, particularly through his aggressive crackdown on illicit brews that had long devastated communities.

Working closely with local administrators and multi agency teams, Mohamud led sustained operations that dismantled illegal alcohol networks, shut down brewing dens, and significantly reduced alcohol related harm.

His efforts were also credited with stabilizing politically volatile areas and curbing unrest, earning him recognition within senior police leadership.

In March 2026, a strategic reshuffle within the National Police Service saw Mohamud transferred to Nairobi to take over as Regional Police Commander, replacing George Seda in a move widely viewed as a calculated decision to strengthen security leadership in the capital.

His appointment has placed him at the center of Kenya’s political and economic heartbeat, a role that demands both operational toughness and diplomatic balance.

Shortly after assuming office, Mohamud signaled his leadership approach by emphasizing collaboration, discipline, and intelligence led policing, often stressing that security in Nairobi requires a collective effort between police, government agencies, and the public.

Colleagues some not authorised to speak to the media told DNK-International described him as a quiet but decisive commander who prioritizes action over rhetoric.

One of the most high profile tests of his authority came on Monday evening during enforcement actions involving Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, when police moved to execute legal processes following the governor’s failure to appear before the Senate Public Accounts Committee.

Under Mohamud’s command, officers conducted searches at City Hall and the governor’s residence, a bold move that underscored his willingness to enforce the law regardless of political stature and reinforced the principle of accountability.

Despite his growing influence, Mohamud remains largely reserved in public, with his most memorable remarks centered on unity and professionalism in policing.

He has consistently maintained that effective security depends on coordination and trust, often advocating for a “whole of society approach” in addressing crime and disorder.

From his early days in Kabete to commanding operations in Machakos, West Pokot, the Western region, and now Nairobi, Issa Mohamud’s career reflects a journey shaped by resilience, discipline, and high-stakes assignments.

As Nairobi continues to face evolving security challenges, his leadership is expected to play a crucial role in maintaining stability in the country’s most critical region.
