Iron-Spined Detective: The Rise of Kenya’s DCI Boss Mohamed Amin

Mohamed Ibrahim Amin has built a reputation as one of Kenya’s most experienced investigators.

He has risen through the ranks over more than three decades to become Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the country’s top criminal probe agency.

Amin who is about 61 years old has dedicated nearly his entire adult life to policing, steadily shaping a career defined by discipline, complex investigations, and institutional reform.

His academic background reflects a deep focus on security and criminology.

He holds a Master’s degree in Criminology and Security Management and a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology and Security Studies from Egerton University, as well as a Diploma in International Studies from University of Nairobi.

The top sleuth, is also a distinguished graduate of the National Defence College, where he emerged among top performers, and has undergone specialized training in governance, ethics, and economic crime investigations.

Amin joined the Kenya Police Service in 1989 after training at Kiganjo Police College, marking the start of a long and decorated career.

His early postings included in Bungoma before he transitioned into the Criminal Investigations Department.

He served in key Nairobi stations such as Pangani and Kasarani.

Over the years, he rose through the ranks from junior officer to senior command, holding positions including Chief Inspector, Superintendent, and Senior Superintendent of Police.

His operational footprint spans much of the country, having served as DCIO in Lang’ata, Kilindini, Thika, and Mandera, and later as Provincial Criminal Investigations Officer in Rift Valley, Western, Central, and North Eastern regions.

He also led critical national units, including the Banking Fraud Investigations Unit at the Central Bank, surveillance and technical services within the Anti-Corruption Police Unit, and the Kenya National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons.

In 2020, he was appointed Director of the Internal Affairs Unit, where he spearheaded police accountability and disciplinary oversight.

His rise to the helm of the DCI came in October 2022 when he was appointed by William Ruto following the resignation of George Kinoti.

His appointment, which followed a competitive recruitment process, signaled confidence in his vast experience and reform driven leadership.

Beyond Kenya, Amin holds influence on the global policing stage.

He serves on the Executive Committee of INTERPOL representing Africa, placing him at the center of international security cooperation and transnational crime strategies.

Known for his firm but reform oriented leadership style, Amin pledged to restore professionalism, integrity, and public trust within the DCI.

In a notable gesture, he adopted an open door policy and even shared his personal contact publicly to encourage direct engagement with citizens,an uncommon move that underscored his commitment to transparency and accountability.

Throughout his career, he has been linked to high profile investigations ranging from post election violence cases to terrorism, cybercrime, and financial crimes, earning both national and international recognition.

Even after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60, he has continued serving under contract extensions, a reflection that multiple sources who talked to DNK-International said that was the confidence placed in his leadership within Kenya’s security system

From a young recruit in 1989 to the country’s chief detective, Mohamed Amin’s journey stands as a testament to persistence, professionalism, and a lifelong commitment to justice in Kenya’s evolving fight against crime.
