At least two people lost their lives while seven others were injured on Saturday after a building under construction collapsed at Ngong View Estate in Karen, Nairobi.

The tragic incident occurred at around 4.00 pm when workers were reportedly casting concrete on one storey structure that suddenly gave way, trapping several of them under heavy debris.

According to police reports from Karen Police Station, the incident was reported by Kenneth Otieno, the chairman of Ngong View Estate.

The building is said to be owned by Engineer Moses Nyakiogora.

A multi agency disaster response team, led by the Regional Criminal Investigations Officer (RCIO) Nairobi Region, alongside officers from Lang’ata Sub County, rushed to the scene.

Rescue efforts were immediately launched to save workers trapped beneath the rubble.

Seven workers were rescued alive with injuries and rushed to hospital.

They include Joseph Kiprotich Langat and Oscah Ngoria, who sustained hand injuries, Sammy Korir with head and hand injuries, Simon Seno and Michael Ndiwa with leg and hand injuries, as well as Gibson Kuboi and Paul Mbuthia, who suffered head and limb injuries.

Sadly, two male workers succumbed to severe crush injuries at the scene.

They were identified as Tuju Mwandikwa and Harrison Ngala.

The bodies of the deceased were transferred to City Mortuary, where they are being preserved pending postmortem examinations.

Rescue and recovery operations are still ongoing, with teams from the National Disaster Management Unit, Nairobi County Disaster Management Team, Kenya Red Cross, and security agencies combing through the debris to ensure no one else remains trapped.

Authorities have launched investigations to establish the cause of the collapse, amid growing concerns over construction safety standards in the city.
