By our Kilgoris Reporter

Teachers in Transmara West Sub-County on Tuesday turned out in large numbers for branch elections of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), held at the Kilgoris DEB grounds.

The polls, which attracted educators from across the sub-county, were conducted in a peaceful and orderly environment under the supervision of union electoral officials. Voting began in the morning hours, with teachers queuing early to elect officials who will steer the affairs of the branch for the next term.

The most competitive race was for the position of Branch Secretary General, drawing three candidates: outgoing office holder Willy Korir, Charles Mirgo, and Rodgers Limpaso.

Mr. Korir sought re-election on a platform of continuity, highlighting what he described as key achievements during his tenure, including improved communication between teachers and union officials and enhanced representation in negotiations affecting members.

His challenger, Mr. Mirgo, campaigned on a reform agenda, pledging to promote transparency, accountability and inclusivity in branch operations. He promised to strengthen professional development initiatives and improve information flow to members.

Mr. Limpaso, also in the race, focused his campaign on grassroots engagement and unity among teachers. He pledged to enhance consultation at the school level and ensure members’ concerns are addressed promptly.

Apart from the Secretary General contest, members also voted for other branch positions, including chairperson, treasurer and executive committee members. The elections underscored KNUT’s internal democratic processes, allowing teachers to directly choose leaders to represent their interests.

Observers at the venue reported a high voter turnout and a calm atmosphere throughout the exercise. Teachers expressed optimism that the newly elected officials would prioritize their welfare and strengthen the union’s presence in the sub-county.

Results were expected to be announced after the completion of vote counting.
